About the Book

Most of us never chose our friends. We simply kept whoever was nearby.

School, the army, the workplace. Friendship is supposed to be something that just happens along the way, and so we never examine it, until the day we need someone and discover that nobody is there.

I write this from open wounds. I watched people disappear at the exact moment the ground beneath me shook. I discovered that what I believed was a stable friendship had been built on gossip, envy, competition, or an interest hidden beneath the surface. I fell into a real crisis, waited for someone to reach out, and found that the phones had gone completely silent.

This book is what I built afterward. Not a complaint, and not a list of people who failed me. A method for telling the difference between someone who is present and someone who is merely nearby, before the crisis arrives rather than during it.

Better three who are real than thirty unearned.

What You Will Gain

A way to see clearly the people already in your life.

You will not be told to cut anyone off, or handed a checklist for judging people. You will be given a way of looking, and most readers find that the looking does the work.

  • The six qualities that decide who stays when it costs them something.
  • A method for mapping the people around you, and seeing where each one actually stands.
  • The language to name what has been quietly wrong in a friendship for years.
  • A way to filter without cruelty, and to withdraw without a confrontation.
  • Practical tools for building new friendships in adult life, when it is hardest.
  • An honest look at what you bring to your own friendships, which is the harder half.
  • Less time spent on people who drain you, and more on the few who do not.

You cannot control who stays. You can control who you invest in, and what you accept.

Words are easy. Actions reveal the truth.

Stop counting friends. Start recognizing them.

The FRIEND Code

Six qualities. One test each.

At the centre of the book is a framework I built over many years. Each letter is a quality, and each quality has a moment when it is proven or exposed.

F

Faithfulness

Do they hold your name the same way when you are not in the room?

R

Respect

Is the balance of power between you equal, or has one of you been shrinking?

I

Inner Depth

Can the conversation go beneath the surface, or does it always stay safe?

E

Empathy

Do they feel what you feel, or simply wait for their turn to speak?

N

Non-Judgment

Can you be wrong in front of them and remain fully accepted?

D

Devotion

When it costs them something real, do they still show up?

What Is Inside

Eighteen chapters, and a workbook you actually use.

The Heart’s Sieve, and why friendship is not optional to a human life.

The question that changes everything, and why almost nobody asks it aloud.

The six pillars of the FRIEND Code, one chapter each.

Filtering friends, and expanding a social network in adult life.

Friendship along the timeline, the gender paradigm, and the virtual friend.

The FRIEND Workbook: six guided exercises, one for each quality.

Twelve practical tools, including mapping your social network and the staircase of change.

From the Book

For many years I was surrounded by many people, and deep down I felt that something fundamental was simply missing. I discovered that we hardly dare to ask the frightening question.

Who remains when the night is cold and the way is dim?

It is both astonishing and agonizing to discover that what you thought was a stable friendship was built on shaky foundations. And at the bottom of the vessel, like gold refined, remain three whose hearts are pure. Better three who are real than thirty unearned.

You already know which friendships you are unsure about.
